Understanding Prostate Diseases Cryosurgery |
|||
|
Cryosurgery (also called cryotherapy or cryoablation) is used to treat
localized prostate cancer by freezing the cells with a metal probe.1
The tool is placed through an incision between the anus and scrotum and
guided into the cancer using transrectal ultrasound.2
Rather than removing the prostate (as in conventional surgery) or using
radiation therapy with different forms of x-rays, cryotherapy is a method
of freezing the prostate and other appropriate nearby tissues to extremely
low temperatures.3 This
technique is designed to kill all the prostate cancer tissue without having
to take the risks involved in carrying out invasive surgery.4
What are possible side effects: Frequent urination, burning, blood, pain with urination, penile or scrotal swelling, or impotence.5 Who makes a good candidate: Men who already have received radiation treatment, or men who are considering radiation.6
