Understanding Prostate Diseases Watchful Waiting |
|||
|
"Watchful Waiting" (also called expectant therapy) is not active
treatment, but it may be a good choice for some men. Because prostate
cancer often grows very slowly, older men who have the disease may not
need treatment.1 Your physician may suggest taking a watch
and wait approach. This course of treatment will involve periodic examinations
to determine if the cancer has become more aggressive. Active treatment
can always be started later if the cancer begins to grow more rapidly
or causes problems.2
What are possible side effects: When waiting and not pursuing active treatment of the cancer, it is possible that the cancer may spread beyond the prostate. Who makes a good candidate: Men diagnosed with prostate cancer in their late 70s or 80s with a limited long-term life expectancy or men in their 60s and 70s with a limited long-term life expectancy.3
