Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men in the United States (other than skin cancer).1 Prostate cancer is a malignant growth of glandular cells within the prostate.2 Typically, these cells are located in the glands that produce the fluid that makes up most of the semen.3

As with other types of cancers, the cancer cells may cross the prostate’s tissue barriers and may then spread throughout the body.4 Prostate cancer typically spreads to three main areas of the body — the lymph nodes that drain the prostate, the spine and ribs.5

Compared with most cancers, prostate cancer tends to grow slowly.6 It may be years from the time the earliest cell changes can be detected under a microscope, until the cancer gets large enough to cause symptoms.7 Advancing prostate cancer may be accompanied by painful symptoms, usually involving the urinary tract or bones, along with weakness, fatigue, and weight loss.8

What are some problems prostate cancer can lead to?

As with other types of cancers, the most obvious problem prostate cancer can lead to is spreading cancer throughout the body.9 Prostate cancer may remain in the prostate gland, or it may spread to nearby lymph nodes, bones, bladder, rectum, or other organs.10

How do I choose a treatment?

Treatment for prostate cancer may involve surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, or watchful waiting.11 As with other diseases of the prostate, the most important part of treatment is regularly meeting with your doctor and discussing your current symptoms. Men whose prostate cancer is slow growing and found at an early stage may not need treatment, also known as watchful waiting or expectant therapy.12

Treatment Options

There are many treatments for prostate cancer. The best one for you depends on a number of factors. These include your age, your overall health, and the stage and grade of your cancer.13

Be sure to discuss with your physician the possible benefits, risks, and side effects with each option. The sections here outline some of the general risks and side effects. However, your doctor is the best source of information on your condition. Before you and your doctor select any treatment approach, the risks and benefits should be thoroughly discussed. Take the time to explore all of your treatment options before making a final decision.
