When faced with a prostate cancer diagnosis, it is important to know that you and your family are not alone. In fact, prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in American men.1 According to American Cancer Society estimates, 232,090 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2005.2 In order to begin to understand this disease, we need to begin with some basic background information about the prostate.
The prostate is a relatively small, walnut-sized gland surrounding the urethra (see graphic at right) at the base of the urinary bladder in males.3 The main role of the gland is to add vital nutrients and fluid to the sperm.4 As the gland enlarges from normal growth or from cancer, it may cause narrowing of the urinary passage making it difficult to urinate.5 The three most common types of prostate disease are benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), prostatitis, and prostate cancer.6
Viadur is indicated in the palliative treatment of advanced prostate cancer and not for benign prostatic hyperplasia or prostatitis. |
